What Is Smokable Hemp Flower?

Smokable hemp flowers are the flowers from a mature female hemp plant that have been cultivated to produce high amounts of the therapeutic compound known as cannabidiol (CBD) and other cannabinoids such as CBDA, CBN, CBG, CBV, and CBDV.

Cannabinoids and other natural compounds of the hemp plant like terpenes have risen in popularity because we are  beginning to see that there may be benefits for consuming smokable hemp flowers.

For example, it was recently reported that smoking hemp cigarettes could help cure tobacco addiction.

Is Smokable Hemp Flower the Same as Cannabis Flower?

Their appearances are nearly identical, as such it is difficult to tell the difference between smokable hemp flowers and cannabis flowers just by looking at them. The scents produced by both are also similar in that earthiness is a common factor. Floral, spicy, or fruity notes are also common in the scents of both.

That being said, the chemical composition of the two flowers is where the most obvious difference lies. While hemp flowers are mainly made up of CBD and other cannabinoids, cannabis flowers have a high percentage of the psychoactive compound known as THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol). This compound binds to cannabinoid, or CB1, receptors in the brain to trigger the “high” feeling that is commonly associated with marijuana.

Smokable hemp flowers on the other hand usually contain less than 0.3% THC, which means that they do not induce a “high” feeling when consumed.

What are the Benefits of Smoking Hemp Flowers?

Smoking hemp flowers are cultivated because their high CBD content may help relieve:

  • Pain
  • Inflammation
  • Insomnia
  • Seizures
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Loss of appetite

Unlike THC, CBD does not alter your mental state. This makes smoking hemp flowers a favorite for many medical marijuana users who don’t always want to feel the psychoactive properties of THC.

CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system through cannabinoid receptors that are located in the nervous system, immune system, and other parts of the body. CB1 receptors are located in the brain while CB2 receptors are located in different parts of the body.

CBD is a negative allosteric modulator at the CB1 receptor while it is a weak agonist at the CB2 receptors. It also acts through other mechanisms to induce its therapeutic effects within the body. For example, it works with the serotonergic system, which helps regulate mood and anxiety issues.

How Do You Use CBD Hemp Flowers?

CBD hemp flowers can be consumed in various ways. First, as previously mentioned, you can smoke them. This way is beneficial because evidence suggests that it can help tobacco addicts quit their addiction. Its mild stimulation and deep relaxation effects simply help tobacco addicts work through their addiction more easily. It may also act on higher centers that are responsible for regulating the urge to smoke tobacco. Note that CBD is not addictive and smoking CBD hemp flowers will not trigger dependence or addiction.

CBD hemp flowers can also be consumed via vaporization, which allows the CBD to hit the bloodstream especially quickly.

Another way of consuming CBD hemp flowers is by drying them up and mixing them in with food recipes. Through the drying process, the hemp flower is decarboxylated, thus converting the inactive CBD to its active state.

Are CBD Hemp Flowers Legal?

The 2018 Agricultural Act legalized hemp at a federal level in the US. Prior to this, the Agricultural Act had legalized hemp research through a number of pilot programs. Currently, 48 states have created (or are in the process of creating) hemp programs within their jurisdictions. Idaho and Mississippi do not have any plans for a hemp program as of yet.

CBD hemp flowers are legal in all states that have legalized hemp production for commercial purposes.
